After camping on the beach for a week in the tropics we decided to head down south. After 18 hours of bus rides we arrived in Medellin- birthplace of Pablo Escobar. This city is maney- huge barrios all made of brick connected by a subway system and cable car. When we arrived we planned on staying for a few days but ended up being there for 2 weeks. It felt good to be in an urban setting again, and the first hot shower in over a month was a plus too.
Medellin is synomas with the drug kingpin Pablo ¨el padrino¨ Escobar- now it is home to a metropolis of plastic barbie dolls and much more of a modern scene than what we have been used to. Capital of Lasik Surgery and up and comming king of cheap plastic surgery destinations in the world; Medellin is very vanity conscious. Everywhere you look is boobjobs, braces, and no glasses. For us it was a place to relax, explore, catch up on bootleg dvd´s, and party till the sun came up. Highlights: wandering arround santa domingo- a brick barrio that is built on the hills like favelas, and all of the friends we met and crazy times we had.
From Medellin we tried to make it to a region called Choco that is primarily controlled by guerrillas, but also known for beautiful rainforest, beaches, and Whale watching. We got a cheap flight in an airplane that was shipping baby chicks but there was a delay because of weather. So we waited at the airport for six hours watching Colombian telivision. Right as the guy from the airlines told us that the flight would have to be delayed untill the next day a news flash came on about the area we were flying to. They reported that there was a bombing that killed five and injured 11 in Buenaventura (the most dangerous place in Colombia) , and pirates attacking Nuqui, Ququi, and Valle - All of the regions we were going to. When we arrived back at the place we had been staying at everyone was relieved to see that we hadn`t left, and we celebrated with one last night in Medellin. The next day we took a 9 hour bus ride to Bogota, Colombia`s capital city.
